Wellington and Delray Beach Intersections Tied for Palm Beach County’s Most Dangerous

Categories:

Palm Beach County is a beautiful place to visit and call home, but it’s not immune to the dangers of roadway accidents. Like the rest of the state, more than half of all fatal and injury crashes occur at intersections, where traffic tends to be heavy.

Most Dangerous Intersections in Palm Beach County

According to recent statistics from the county’s traffic engineering division, the intersection of Forest Hill Boulevard and State Road 7 in Wellington topped the list for the most intersection crashes in Palm Beach County last year. The second most dangerous was located in Delray Beach at the intersection of South Military Trail and Atlantic Avenue. A staggering 96 accidents were reported at both intersections in 2021, underscoring the hazards for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Last year, Palm Beach County intersection crashes resulted in 66 fatalities and some 375 serious injuries. Authorities say that behaviors like distracted driving, speeding, and aggressive driving are at least partially responsible for the accidents. This supports data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which indicates that driver error factors into the vast majority of intersection wrecks.

Wellington’s intersection at State Road 7 and Forest Hill Boulevard is one of the most heavily trafficked in the county, thanks to its proximity to retail and commercial establishments.

While local police have stepped up efforts to enforce traffic laws and promote driver safety, the area’s growing population and connections to interstate traffic have also contributed to the problem.

The following Palm Beach County intersections recorded the highest number of traffic accidents in 2021:

  • State Road 7 and Forest Hill Boulevard, Wellington, and South Military Trail and Atlantic Avenue, Delray Beach
  • PGA Boulevard and North Military Trail, in Palm Beach Gardens
  • Atlantic Avenue and Congress Avenue, in Delray Beach
  • Atlantic Avenue and NB Interstate 95, in Delray Beach
  • Palm Beach Lakes and Spencer Drive/Village Boulevard, Wabasso Drive/Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and North Congress Avenue and 45th Street and Okeechobee Boulevard, in West Palm Beach

Primary causes of intersection crashes

It is no surprise that intersection accidents in Palm Beach County are overwhelmingly attributed to negligent motorists who are simply not paying attention behind the wheel. The most common driver errors related to intersection crashes include:

  • Distractions or inattention such as texting, making phone calls, or use of an electronic device
  • Incorrect assumption of another motorist’s action
  • Making a turn with a blocked view
  • Illegal maneuvers
  • Ignored traffic signals
  • Misjudgment of another vehicle’s speed

Unfortunately, intersection collisions can produce serious bodily injuries, ranging from broken bones to spinal cord trauma and brain injury.
